Last night, as I flew home from a weekend trip to NY, I talked with a most interesting New Yorker. We talked about money and business for a few hours. At one point she asked for help with some relatives who want a new pool. Actually her sister-in-law wants a pool, but her husband doesn't.
This was my advice. The couple should work together. The husband should discover why his wife wants a pool. Talk with the entire family about it. Do others want it? Is the pool the best solution for what the family needs (unity, play, etc.)? Can they save money by buying used? Can they get a discount by buying at another time? How many places should they call to find the best deal? Is an in-ground or above-ground best? What could they do to generate extra income to afford it in cash? How can they get the pool now, in cash with no regrets?
Too often spouses fight each other instead of passionately pursuing each others dreams.
No, don't spend $45,000 on a pool. But perhaps working together to get a pool in cash at 80% retail could be the very thing to rekindle happiness and prolong an enduring relationship.
