You might be familiar with To Kill A Mockingbird from high school English class. "People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for..." is one of the thought provoking lines from the classic book.
In order to improve we must see and hear beyond what we are looking for. We must be open to see and hear anything. We must not let our eyes and ears be clouted with preconceptions.
Preconceptions/judgements/discrminations/biases clout are abilty to remain open.
When was the last time you were eager to prove your biases wrong ?
Try the following to avoid seeing or hearing what your looking for:
- Eat and enjoy new foods
- Find one amazing quality in someone you dislike
- Intently listen and learn from someone who annoys you
- Read a book
- from a unfamilar genre
- Attend a unfamilar cultural event
Opening up to new things without latent biases is a quest of lifetime. It takes great humility to replace "I dislike____" with "I will try____"
