To paraphrase Henry David Thoreau, There are a thousand hacking at the branches of [debt] to one who is striking at the root.
There are several money management ideas which focus exclusively on the branches. They focus on less significant correlates or actions like "shop your insurance every year." Forgotten is the fact that when you switch insurance you lose accident forgiveness over 80% of the time. We need to control our thinking by focusing on significant behaviors that increase our wealth not mere money mantra fodder.
Think of cooking. There are many things you could do to try to cook well. But there are only a handful of vital culinary behaviors to achive optimal results.
"Roots" are vital behaviors that really make a difference. Roots are embodied in paradigms, beliefs, dreams and values. In money matters some of those vital behaviors are:
Establish a budget.
Communicate your dreams and needs with your family.
Pay as you go.
Use it up ... Wear it out.
Make it do ... Or do without.
These behaviors are not corollaries only. These are the roots of financial success.
Millions of people are striving to increase their income or pay off debt by striking at the branches. Be effective and strike at the root. Carpe diem!
