Rationalization is supplying a logical or rational reason as opposed to the real reason. In other words making excuses instead of taking responsibility for a setback.
Rationalization is a defence mechanism that prevents people from getting better because they blame other events and people instead of boldly changing their self.
A few common rational lies:
- No one is hiring instead of I need more training or I need to work on my people skills.
- We have to use credit cards for this emergency instead of we neglected to save for a rainy day.
- We really need new windows/siding/car/roof instead of we choose to spend money to numb our pain or enhance our image.
Dr Phil famously asks people "How is that working for you?" as a way to help them avoid rational lies and instead 'get real.' If you think you are an exception and tend not to rationalize, you may be rationalizing.
Nowhere is rationalization more prevalent then in financial discussions. Check your words over the next few days and see if your are blaming circumstances and people instead of handling money wisely.
