My four year old daughter and my six year old son listened intently at Church
last week. My four year old girl thought the prayer would be offered by a lady named Zombie.
She told my son who asked if the Zombie was a boy or a girl. Needless to say they listened intently to the "Zombie."
Zombies appear in Scooby-Doo episodes. And they are in real life too.
Zombies are "hypnotized, bereft of consciousness and self-awareness." In other words they aren't self-aware and neglect self-evaluation. They don't posses passion for a purpose. They have lost a childlike ability to dream and create.
I discovered my zombie like existence as I read journal entries from when I was 14 years old. When I was 14 I lifted weights, played basketball, spent time with friends and did some homework in my free time but I seemed like a Zombie--purposeless, drifting without an aim. My journal entries were about happenings and rarely about thoughts, goals, dreams, aspirations.
I was existing without creating.
Thankfully around my 15th birthday I began to think, question, and change my life. I began to choose my friends instead of drifting towards admirers. I started working towards my goals. I discovered contentment in being still instead of seeking out a new thrill. My motions began to have meaning. I found joy in being with my parents and sisters, nieces and nephews.
It seems that many people are in a current Zombie state. They are doing much, but lacking any purpose in life. They are busy going and going, but not in any particular direction. Others are going fast to fame or perhaps fortune but they are abandoning integrity and family to do it.
Is 80 hours of crazy work each week (or 20 hours of Sports) worth losing your family? Is traveling for work every week or weekend best for your family? Admittedly some people may need to work long hours and weekends to pay off debt or gain training, but some choose long hours to make extra money beyond basic needs and some wants. Some get more of a thrill from excessive work than from energized relationships.
Why do you earn money?
What is the purpose of work? Who do you work for?
Who matters most to you? Do you act like it?
Why does thinking matter?
How often do you think deeply about your life's vision?
When did you last contemplate how to help your children/ grandchildren?
What will you do to change the world?
What must you do to change yourself?
Will you be known for what you made/ sold/ did or who you are?
Come alive with purpose and put off your Zombie-like tendencies. Think, dream, create, and get outside yourself. Become a child again. Live with purpose and go forward with passion like little children enthralled with thoughtless Zombies.
